Newsletter 12/05/16

PTO is on Monday Night at 6:00 pm in the Library.  What a great group that does so much for our students.  Please come and join us.

Family Math Fun is Thursday, December 8 from 6:00-7:00 in the gym.  We will have snacks and prizes.  Learn easy, fun games to practice math fluency at home!  Have fun with your family-all ages welcome.  It is a blast when your own kids beat you in a game and you are really trying!

The Book Fair is in our Library this week.  Come and check out the great books and items that your kids love.

As the weather gets cold and rainy, please make sure that your students are wearing coats when they come to school.  Please make sure you write your child’s name in the coat or sweatshirt.  We get so many clothes in our Lost and Found.  If possible, we want our students to do outside recess so they can run off some of that great energy.  If your child does not have a coat, please contact the office so that we can help support you.

The Tailgater and Parent Conferences were a real success.  We had over 250 parents and family members show up to the Tailgater.  Thanks to Sanipac for having their awesome Duck Truck there.  They also donated hot dogs and buns.  The Parent Conferences was a great chance to build that partnership between parents, students, and staff.

Each year, we do the Holiday Care and Share.  This is where we identify families who need support.  We have helped 40 families this year.  As I have shared in the past, when I was growing up, my family would have been one of those that needed assistance.  We greatly appreciate all those that aided our families.  That is what makes our Awbrey Park community so special.

Our Pride Assembly is on December 15 at 10:30.  This is a short assembly where we honor students who get Pride Awards.  If a student gets a Pride Award, parents will be notified beforehand.

Winter Weather: How to know when schools are closed

Sign up now for snow day alert texts

When winter weather arrives, schools may be closed or delayed or buses may use snow routes. School districts decide early in the morning whether there is a need to change the school schedule or bus routes. These decisions are made districtwide and are the same for every 4J school.

There are several ways to find out if there is a change on snowy or icy days:

  • Text-message alerts via Twitter — to sign up, just text FOLLOW 4JWEATHER to 40404
  • 4J website,
  • KRVM 91.9 FM
  • Other radio and television news stations

If there is a school closure or other change, the school district will announce it before 6:30 a.m. If schools and buses are on their regular schedule, there will NOT be an announcement.

Parents of students who ride school buses that have alternate snow routes have been informed of what to do. Snow route information can be found on the district website at

If school is in session, families are encouraged to consider road conditions in their areas and make their own decisions based on safety. Parents’ individual decisions about school attendance will be honored.
